Katie Armiger to perform at the Amador County Fair

Confident, secure, bold, assertive, vulnerable and in-your-face could all describe both the songs on the new album, Confessions of a Nice Girl, as well as the artist who sings them. Katie Armiger, who released her first album when she was just 15 years old, has amassed a collection of songs on her third album that touches upon just about every emotion imaginable – love, infatuation, anger, sadness, hurt, happiness – and she is unabashedly unapologetic in showcasing her feelings, whatever form they may encompass.

The 19-year-old singer-songwriter has accomplished more during her four years as a recording artist than most people twice her age. Her previous single, “Kiss Me Now,” the flirtatious ode to new love she co-wrote with Sarah Buxton and Blair Daly, was her second to hit the Top 40 on the Billboard Indicator Chart, while “Trail of Lies” landed in the Top 20 on Music Row, setting a record as the Highest Charting Independent Female Artist in 2009. Katie also earned the title of the Highest Charting Independent Female Artist of 2008 on R&R with “Unseen,” and the young lady with the enviable voice set yet another record for the highest debut for a solo independent artist since 2003 on the Music Row chart with her debut single, “17 in Abilene,” in 2007.

The dream of making it on Music Row seemed fated for the Texas native with the soaring voice and radiant personality, reminiscent of Martina McBride, Shania Twain and Sara Evans. At the ripe old age of 10, Katie discovered a talent for arranging her thoughts and feelings into writing songs and poetry. Honing her craft, Katie also realized she could put those songs and poems to music and perform them with understated conviction. When she was 14, she entered Houston’s Best Country Singer competition sponsored by Radio 93Q Country, and after eight weeks, she took home the grand prize and a shot at recording a two-song demo, which developed into her self-titled debut album.

Where else, but the Amador County Fair can you meet a Captain of the Bering Sea, a wheelwright who traveled the United States by covered wagon, or a trendy young band from LA with a name like “Arrest My Sister”? You can taste fine award-winning wines with the Amador Winegrowers on Friday night, or hoist a microbrew at the Brew Tastings on the weekend.

The bands coming in for the Fair provide a broad spectrum as well. Young country western talent from neighboring El Dorado County, Whiskey Dawn, is making waves as they look for their big break, and will kick off the Picnic Hill Concert Series on Thursday night, while Nashville Billboard Country recording artist, Katie Armiger, takes the stage on Sunday night to wrap things up with her hits “Kiss Me Now” and “The Best Song Ever”.

As usual there are hours of fun things for kids to do that don’t cost parents a nickel, including free admission on Thursday until 6:00 pm. The shows at the Puppets & Players Theatre will keep them mesmerized, all kinds of fun activities await in the 49er Kids Town, and they can learn about Amador County’s Miwok culture under the willow-branch-covered round lodge, where they can make and take home a craft project. At the Gold Mine they can pan for gold, though they probably won’t end up rich!

There’s a charge for entertainment in the Grandstands Friday through Sunday, but that won’t stop capacity crowds at the Truck Pulls on Friday night, the Rodeo on Saturday and the packed Destruction Derby on Sunday. Buying your reserved seat in advance is a good idea. Thursday night the arena will host the Mutton Bustin’ preliminary round with the finalists going on to compete during the rodeo. There’s no charge on Thursday night.

Probably the most unexpected star to drop into the Amador County Fair is one of the Captains of the Bering Sea crabber vessel the Wizard. The blockbuster TV show “Deadliest Catch” seen on Discovery Channel has made a celebrity of Relief Captain and First Mate Monty Colburn and his brother Captain Keith Colburn. The two are descendants of Harold Colburn, one of the founders of the Amador County Fair, and son of Gary Colburn, well-known resident of the County. Captain Monty and crew members Lynn Guitard and Lenny Lekanoff will start the day at the Kids Parade on Thursday, enjoy the Fair then tell tales of the sea, answer questions, and sign autographs in the evening.

With the release of their first original album, Dear Nashville, Whiskey Dawn’s popularity has sky-rocketed to unimagined heights. Mutton Bustin' and Calf Scramble at the Nevada County Fair

Two new arena events – Mutton Bustin’ and Calf Scramble – are planned for young children and teens in the Arena on Wednesday and Thursday night of the Nevada County Fair, August 11 - 15.

Featured in the Arena during the Professional Bull riding on Wednesday and the Rodeo on Thursday will be Mutton Bustin’, where eight young cowboys and cowgirls between the ages of 5 and 7 years old will get the chance each evening to mount a trusty sheep and head for the thrill of their young lives. Participants must be between the ages of 5 – 7, and must not weigh more than 65 pounds.

Also featured at the Arena on the same two nights will be the Calf Scramble, where ten teams, each consisting of a boy and girl, will compete with one another to catch, halter and coax a calf across the finish line. Participants must be between the ages of 12 – 18, and must weigh at least 100 pounds.

Western attire is required for both events, and there is no entry fee. Sheep and calves provided to the contestants during each event. Great prizes will be awarded for both events. For the Mutton Bustin’, prizes are $50 for first prize, $25 for second prize, and $10 for third prize. For the Calf Scramble, prizes are $100 for first prize, $50 for second prize, and $25 for third prize. There are a limited number of spots available, so call the Fair Office at (530) 273-6217 to reserve a spot in either event, as well as obtain an application and a list of rules. Presented by the Amador County Wine Grape Growers Association from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm the event features more than 40 wineries showcasing award-winning wines from the 2010 competition. Appetizers from Beth Sogaard Catering, locally-made sausages from Swingle Meat Company, and gourmet platters of aged cheeses and fresh fruits and vegetables. The Amador County Fair Wine Competition last Saturday, June 5, offered more than 450 wines for judging in the highly regarded annual Amador County Commercial Wine Competition. Entries were restricted to wines that can be identified as originating in the Sierra Foothill AVA (American Viticultural Area).

The Sierra Foothill AVA runs for 170 miles along the foot of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. This designation can be claimed by wines derived from grapes grown from any of following California Counties: Amador, Calaveras, El Dorado, Mariposa, Nevada, Placer, Tuolumne, and Yuba.

With only 6,163 acres in vineyard production, The Sierra Foothill AVA crushes less than 1% of the State’s total wine grape production. However, the topography and generally infertile shallow mountainside soils combine with a Mediterranean climate to create moderate stress on the grapevines producing low to moderate yields of very high quality grapes.That quality was on display in the 2010 Amador County Commercial Wine Competition.

Seven panels of some of the State’s most experienced judges spent nearly seven hours, swirling, sipping and spitting 464 wines from 72 different wineries. Their time was spent in a concerted effort to determine the “Best of Class” in 34 separate varietal categories plus an additional nine awards that terminated in awarding the Best Red, Best White, Best Blush, Best other Wine and finally the overall Best of Show. As the wines in this competition so aptly demonstrate, the Sierra Foothills is a unique AVA with numerous wineries having a well deserved reputation for delivering well crafted high quality wines that typically are recognized at the California State Fair competition.

What has been a closely guarded secret among some wine lovers is rapidly being discovered by the rest of the State…..head to the hills for some of the best wines in California.

Wrecks Waiting to Happen at the Amador County Fair

The Amador County Fair Destruction Derby is about “Destroy or be Destroyed” and the crash ’em / smash ’em event slated for the Grandstands arena on Sunday, August 1, at 7:00 pm, will be no different. Drivers do their best, while driving in reverse, in a bed of mud, to smash the other cars to smithereens. The audience cheers as mud flies, wheels spin in the gooey mess, and one car after another is annihilated or the overworked and overheated engines give up in a smoky haze.

Between heats, teams madly pull out major dents that might keep a wheel from turning, weld broken parts, and tinker with barely running engines in order to make it back out to the next heat. The last car running in each heat goes on to the final championship event.

Put on by the Jackson Rotary Club, the Destruction Derby is a major fund-raiser for the club who supports community services such as the Interfaith Food Bank. If you plan to attend the Amador County Fair Destruction Derby, get your tickets in advance as the lines form early for this sell-out event. Tickets are Reserved $15 all ages, General Admission $10, Children 6 and under $5, in addition to the Fair’s general gate admission.

Professional Rodeo bucks into the Amador County Fair July 31

Jack Mitchell, publisher of the Ledger-Dispatch bravely climbed aboard one of the 4 Star Rodeo’s massive bulls at the 2009 Amador County Fair. Cowboys must ride eight seconds for a qualified ride during a rodeo. Jack claims he hung on for 0.08 seconds. He says he’d rather be hung by his feet from a burning rope. The Fair means to take him up on that this year, and let the pros handle the bulls.

Bull riding is the most notorious of professional rodeo events and Four Star Rodeo Company is known among bull riders to have top of the line stock, including 2007 NFR (National Finals Rodeo) Champion Bull, Shakedown. But why would anyone climb on the back of a bucking bull for a small chance at a little bit of prize money and a silver buckle? Most would consider it a foolhardy act. The risks are obvious. Serious injury is always a possibility for those fearless or foolish enough to sit astride an animal that weighs nearly a ton and is usually equipped with dangerous horns. But cowboys do it, fans love it, and bull riding may rank as rodeo’s most popular sport.

Professional rodeo features skills developed by cowboys on the ranches and trail rides at the turn of the century, including roping, riding bucking animals, and racing the fastest short-distance horses in the world. The risk-takers are willing to climb on the back of a wild, bucking bronc or a notorious bull for a share of the purse or a silver buckle and the ride of a lifetime. It can take just eight seconds — if you can last that long!.

Timed events, such as calf or team roping and steer wrestling, are skills that require training and experience by both horses and riders. A good roping or hazing horse can cost in the tens of thousands of dollars and are the only animal athletes that are shared among the cowboys for a percentage of the earnings.

Dave Stamey to Headline Amador County Fair Cowboy Poetry & Music Roundup July 29

Amador County Fair will host the first annual Cowboy Poetry and Music Roundup featuring poets Dave Stamey, Jerry Bell, Jim King, and Ron Scofield. Tickets for the show are $10 for adults and $5 for ages six and under and do not include admission to the Fair..

Old Cowboys and Indians Magazine has called Dave Stamey “the Charley Russell of Western Music.” Dave Stamey has been a cowboy, a mule packer, a dude wrangler, and is now one of the most popular Western entertainers working today. Dave can tell you some tales. He has been bucked off and stomped by many horses. He has been stepped on by mules and dragged around branding pens by cattle of many sizes. He’s ridden in the rain, in the snow, in the rain some more, in pretty nasty heat, and in feedlot pens where the air was thick and decidedly fragrant. He’s even wrangled dudes.

He has been twice voted Entertainer of the Year, three times Male Performer of the Year and twice Songwriter of the Year by the Western Music Association, and received the Will Rogers Award from the Academy of Western Artists.

Draft Horse Classic Tickets on Sale Now

Majestic Draft Horse performances, breath-taking competitions, and seeing a Draft Horse “up-close” are all part of the festivities at the 24th annual Draft Horse Classic and Harvest Fair, September 23 – 26, at the Nevada County Fairgrounds in Grass Valley.

Tickets to this event are on-sale now. In order to provide the best possible customer service, we’ve placed ticket orders into time slots – beginning May 1, we'll be accepting mail and FAX orders only. Beginning June 1, we'll be accepting phone orders and walk-ins.

For tickets, purchase them before Wednesday, September 22, and tickets are $18 for general seating and $21 for reserved seating. After September 22, performance tickets are $21 for general seating and $24 for reserved seating. The Nevada County Fairgrounds and HOPE (Help Other People Eat) in Nevada County are teaming up to help feed those in need in Nevada County.

Bring a can of food (or two or three) to the Country Christmas Faire on Sunday, November 29, and the Fairgrounds will give you a coupon for $1 off general admission to the Christmas Faire on that day. Volunteers from HOPE will collect the cans at the food collection bins at the Fairgrounds from 10 am – 4 pm at Gates 1, 3 and 5, which is also where you’ll receive your coupon.

With the help of HOPE, all food collected at the Fairgrounds on Sunday will be used to help feed those in need in Nevada County. HOPE in Nevada County is a program established through the Grass Valley Elks. Through this program, the Grass Valley Elks partner with the Food Bank of Nevada County to feed those in need, as well as working with the organization on a school snack program. HOPE distributes food once a month to anyone in the county in need of food.

The Country Christmas Faire is happening Thanksgiving weekend, November 27 – 29, at the Nevada County Fairgrounds. Hours are 10 am – 5 pm on Friday and Saturday, and 10 am – 4 pm on Sunday. Cost is $4, and free to children under 12.

49er Treasure Trail clues you in to Amador County

49er Treasure Trail, March 28-29, 2009. Come to Amador County for a 2-day treasure hunt that will lead you on an adventure through historic downtowns, a castle, gold mine, vineyard, water-powered foundry, and Chinese apothecary. For more information, visit www.touramador.com and click on events or phone (877) TOUR AMADOR (868-7262). The event is great for all ages. Form a team or come alone and arrive prepared for an adventure in Amador County.

Registration is open now and costs $10 per person. Players are encouraged to form teams to play the game. Proceeds will benefit Amador Council of Tourism and the local Interfaith Food Bank. The registration form can be downloaded at www.touramador.com.Click on events and go to the listing for 49er Treasure Trail.

The game hours are 9 am to 1 pm on Saturday and 9 am to noon on Sunday. An awards ceremony will take place Sunday, starting at noon, where the winners will be announced and some other awards will be issued. The hunt is a fun way to get to know the area and the community, while learning a little bit along the way. Each downtown has selected a theme and the clues will revolve around the theme. When the players get to the historic downtowns they will experience people dressed in costume of a certain era like the Gold Rush or roaring '20's or the railroad.

Participants receive a program with rules and map, lanyard and ID, a gunny sack to hold tokens, and their first set of clues. Solve a clue and receive a token. Points can also be earned by stopping in businesses that are Play Spots. Guidelines will be posted at each business on how to earn Play Money. Prizes will be given for the most tokens and play money collected, plus other awards like who traveled the furthest, most fun team, greenest team, etc. Prizes include hotel rooms, meals, merchandise, show tickets, and gift certificates from local merchants. Winners also earn free admission to next year’s event.

Once again the historic Benny Brown Arena and the Amador County Fairground and Events Center will be energized with these talented young men and women.

We salute the efforts of the parents, officials, friends, sponsors and relatives who give of themselves to help our youth. As everyone knows, fast times and high scores don’t “just happen”. So, to those behind the scenes who don’t get the buckle, a tip of the hat. This is truly the foundation from which this great nation was built upon.

Entertaining & Informative Horse Demos Scheduled

Demonstrations showcasing everything from handling baby foals to riding a young horse for its first time, and from miniatures to draft horses, are scheduled at the 2008 Nevada County Fair, August 6 – 10. Demonstrations take place every half hour from 11:30 am until 5:30 pm Wednesday through Sunday. In addition, a halter competition is slated for Thursday at 8 am.

“Our goal is to entertain visitors, as well as help educate them,” says Horse Exhibit Coordinator Ron Davis. “We have lined up exhibitors from all over Northern California.”

There will be draft horses pulling wagons, barrel racing, dressage, and foal handling exhibitions. Each day at 3:30 pm, professional horse trainer Jerily McCormick will demonstrate how to start round-pen training with a two-year-old colt. “Hopefully, the horse will advance from basic ground training the first day to being able to be ridden at a walk, jog and lope by the fifth day,” explains McCormick, a Nevada County resident who has been training horses for two decades.

Haflingers, the “Golden Horse of Austria,” reveal their versatility by pulling carriages, jumping, being ridden English and Western, and playing a competitive game of equine soccer. The horses actually kick the beach ball with their legs, trying to score goals (see photo).

Other breeds will also be featured, including Peruvian Pasos, Paints, Quarter Horses, Arabians, Morgans, Tennessee Walking Horses, Mules, Shires, Spotted Drafts, and Miniature horses. On Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 2 pm, herding dogs will exhibit their innate abilities to gather and move sheep and other livestock.

For the first time, the Nevada County Fair is providing organizations and businesses the opportunity to sponsor and drive a car in the Fair’s popular Demolition Derby, while at the same time raising money for a favorite charity or service organization.

Organizations and businesses can purchase a car for $500 and the Fair will provide a Derby car to use. The organization can choose to provide its own driver or the Fair will provide a driver. Additionally, the car can be picked up on August 1 to customize it or leave it at the Fair, where it will have a number painted on it.

The sponsored Derby cars will participate in their own event at the Demolition Derby, held Sunday, August 10 at 7 pm in the Arena. The last of the sponsored cars moving will receive $1,000 towards the charity or service organization of their choice.

The 22nd Annual Draft Horse Classic and Harvest Fair
draws horse enthusiasts from across the nation

Beginning May 1, performance tickets will go on sale for the 22nd Annual Draft Horse Classic and Harvest Fair, which takes place September 18 – 21 at the Nevada County Fairgrounds. On May 1, orders will be accepted by mail or FAX only. Phone orders and walk-in orders will be accepted beginning June 1. Order forms can be downloaded from the Fair’s website at http://www.nevadacountyfair.com/dhc, or by visiting the Fairgrounds’ Main Office on McCourtney Road. It is recommended that customers take advantage of the early mail or fax option because it provides the best available seating and weekend evening performances often sell out early.

The four-day Draft Horse Classic and Harvest Fair will feature six performances by draft horses displaying their strength and precision in the show ring. Although there is a charge for the performances in the arena, admission to the Fairgrounds is free, allowing visitors to stroll the grounds, pick up a western item or two from vendors, listen to the various entertainment acts, enjoy the world-class western art exhibit, and savor a treat from Treat Street.

Advanced tickets for reserved seating at the Draft Horse Classic arena are $21 a person, or $24 if purchased on the day of the event. General admission seats – first come, first seated – are $18 in advance, or $21 if purchased the day of the event.
